General Information School nurses are provided on a part time basis. The school nurse may make contact with parents regarding any health issues. She will not take responsibility for evaluating signs of illness or injury that have occurred at home. These should be referred to your family doctor or an emergency room. Parents will be contacted immediately should a situation warrant when their child becomes ill or has an accident at school. In serious situations when a parent cannot be contacted, the principal or principal's designee will request the assistance of local emergency medical personnel. Services will be provided if a medical release has been signed. Judgment in such cases is at the discretion of school authorities, and, and parents assume financial responsibility. Please keep your current telephone number, the name of the contact person for emergencies and their current number on file in the office. Please be sure to return to the teacher the emergency authorization form at the beginning of the year.

Clinic Services and Medications Children who become ill at school will be cared for in the designated clinic area. If necessary, simple first aid procedures will be administered. Emergencies will be handled appropriately and parents will be promptly notified. If your child requires the administration of medicine during school hours, you must send the medication(s) in the original prescription container(s). Include a note to the school stating at what time the medications(s) should be administered to your child. No internal medicines such as Tylenol shall be given without prior parent approval. Authorization to administer Tylenol may be given to school personnel by signing the appropriate authorization notice sent home at the beginning of the year. As long as prescribed and/or over-the-county medicine is administered in accordance with the schedule/directions as described by the parent/guardian and/or physician, the Newton county board of Education is released from any liability in the event of injury or adverse effects to the child as a result of the administering of such medication. Students with asthma may self-administer prescription asthma medication as needed; however parents/guardians of asthmatic students shall complete a medical form with the school office detaining the medication and usage. The asthma medication to be self-administered should be labeled with the information cited above in the inhaler. Students meeting the above requirements may self-medicate without clinic approval. The school accepts no liability for such medication.
