Newton
High School Student involvement is one of the keys to a successful high school career. Newton High School provides many organizations, allowing students the opportunity to develop social, environmental, artistic, physical, academic and athletic skills. Listed below are some of the many extra-curricular opportunities available at Newton High School. Come on....get involved - become a part of Newton High School's clubs and organizations! All clubs meet after school. • AMICAE Junior Civitan Club (Sponsor: Ms. Diana Brown, Mrs. Leigh Vrable) - AMICAE is community service organization that focuses on helping the less fortunate and special needs individuals. Past Activities: Special Olympics volunteers; Valentine's Day Dance; visits to Hope Lodge American Cancer Society, visits to Remington House Nursing Home. Planned Activities: Special Olympics volunteers; Valentine's Day Dance; visits to Hope Lodge American Cancer Society, visits to Remington House Nursing Home; fundraiser to support Fuzz Run; Relay for Life; canned goods collection for the needy. • Anchor Club (Sponsor: Ms. Theresa Shields) - This is an international service organization committed to improving the quality of life in the community. The primary focus is on helping individuals suffering from brain related disorders. Past Activities: Brain Minders puppet show; safety awareness programs; Relay for Life; provide books and teddy bears to children in hospitals; nursing home visits; fundraising for Paws for Patriots that provides and trains guide dogs to injured service men and women. Planned Activities: Same as above • Anime/Manga Club (Sponsor: Mr. Steven Slocumb) - The club explores Japanese culture by screening and discussing anime (Japanese cartoons and graphics). Past Activities: Monthly meetings, Halloween costume dance. • Art Club (Sponsor: Ms. Ernestine Bailey) - The art club gives students more opportunity to develop their visual art skills and enhances their appreciation for classical art. Past Activities: Club trip to the Atlanta High Museum of Art; various artistic projects, art appreciation breakfast; and participation in art exhibits. Planned Activities: Club trip to the Atlanta High Museum of Art; various artistic projects, art appreciation breakfast; participation in art exhibits; school T-shirt design competition; art history projects, and field trip to Oxford College. • Band Director of Bands: Mr. Barrett Alexander • BETA Club (Sponsor: Ms. Adele May) - The BETA club promotes character, develops leadership skills, encourages service involvement, and recognizes achievement. Past Activities: Relay for Life; valentines to nursing homes; gathering gifts for teen shelters, monthly club meetings and social events. Planned Activities: Relay for Life; valentines to nursing homes; gifts for teen shelters; monthly club meetings, and social events. • Career Awareness Group (Sponsor: Ms. Katrina Rucker) - the purpose of the club is to provide students with information regarding carious career opportunities and post-secondary education options. Past Activities: Group discussions regarding career opportunities; invited several speakers to club meetings. Planned Activities: Monthly meetings featuring guest speakers from industry and colleges; workshops on how to make the most out of high school; establishment of a Career Awareness Panel to disseminate information to other students. • Close-up Club (Sponsor: Mr. Jeff Ransom) - Close-Up is the nation's largest non-partisan citizenship education organization. It promotes responsible and informed participation in the democratic process through a variety of educational programs. Past Activities: Monthly meetings; week-long trip to Washington D.C.; political candidate programs; trip to state supreme court; and trip to state legislature. Planned Activities: Monthly meetings; week-long trip to Washington D.C.; political candidate programs; trip to state Supreme Court; and trip to state legislature. • Creative Writing Club (Sponsor: Ms. Laurin Johnson) - The club is dedicated to improving student social skills/interactions, literary presentation techniques, and writing as means of a close study of a variety of fiction writing approaches. Past Activities: Workshops to help improve individual writing skills; periodic poetry readings, monthly meetings. Planned Activities: Coordinate with RamPage staff to create a student publication of original fiction and poetry; poetry competition. • DECA (Sponsor: Ms. Julie Brand) - Membership is restricted to students with a career interest in marketing, hospitality, finance, sales, business administrations, and entrepreneurship. Past Activities: Region, state, and nations competitive events; Relay for Life; Clean Community Campaign; and fundraiser for Katrina victims. Planned Activities: Same as above with the addition of more community-related service activities. • Drama Club (Sponsor: Ms. Donna Sadow) - Club participants will have the opportunity to learn about all aspects of theatre production and performance. Past Activities: Field trip to the Shakespeare Tavern to view a series of one-act plays; field trip to view Oxford College theatre productions; workshops with guest artists/performers; several school theatrical productions. Planned Activities: Field trip to Shakespeare Tavern; field trip to Oxford College; various workshops and seminars; three stage productions; improvisation workshops. • Fellowship of Christian Athletes (Sponsor: Mrs. Jamie Summerour) - FCA is an organizations of Christian students who meet and rejoice in their faith. Past Activities: Monthly meetings, visiting various nursing homes; sending packages to soldiers deployed to Iraq, various fund raising for charities. Planned Activities: Same as above • French Club - Le Club Francais (Sponsor: Ms. Genedi Shamburger) - The purpose of the French Club is to provide an open atmosphere in which students can practice their French conversational skills and discuss French culture. Past Activities: New Club Planned Activities: Monthly meetings; French movie night; game nights; visit to the Atlanta Museum of High Art; Mardi Gras event; French poetry reading; and other related activities. • Future Business Leaders of America - FBLA (Sponsor: Ms. Debra Lary, Ken Ondracek, & April Wade) - FBLA is an educational association of students preparing for careers in business. Past Activities: Leadership conferences; community service projects; monthly membership meetings. Planned Activities: Monthly meetings; community service projects; leadership conferences. • Future Farmers' of America (Sponsor: Mr. Ryan Talton & Justin Bennett) - The mission of FFA is to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for future leadership and career success. Past Activities: State Convention Expo; livestock shows, COLT Conference; FFA meetings and social gatherings. Planned Activities: State Convention Expo; National Convention, livestock shows, FFA meetings and social gatherings; COLT Conference. • Future Teachers of America (Sponsor: Ms. Sandra Taylor) - The club's mission is to encourage and support students interested in entering the teaching profession. Past Activities: Shadow a Teacher Program; Read Across America; County Spelling Bee; Teacher Appreciation Week; Georgia Association of Educators Conventions. Planned Activities: Same as previously noted. • Health Occupations Students of America (Sponsor: Ms. Tommie Elaine Shattuck) - HOSA is a national student organization endorsed by the U.S. Department of Education. Its two-fold mission is to promote career opportunities in the healthcare industry. Past Activities: Blood pressure screenings; State Leadership Conference; AIDS Walk; Career Day, Literacy Program at Porterdale Elementary School; Youth Leadership Conference; CPS certification. Planned Activities: National Leadership Conference; bi-monthly visits to nursing homes; State Leadership Conference; HOSA Adopt-A-Grandparent Program; annual AIDS Walk. • History Club (Sponsor: Mr. Rathan Kersey) - The club endeavors to enrich and enlighten the members through in depth study of history. Past Activities: Renaissance Festival, Civil War Re-Enactment; Halloween Party; and student tutoring services. Planned Activities: Renaissance Festival, Civil War Re-Enactment; Halloween Party; student tutoring services, field trips to various museums; and movie night. • Key Club (Sponsor: Ms. Shannon Buff) - Key Club is an international, student-led organization providing its members with opportunities to perform civic service, build character, and develop leadership. Past Activities: Prepare gifts for international charities; Literacy Book Drive; various fundraisers for charity; Special Olympics Volunteers; Nursing Home Visits; Entertainment for annual DFACS Foster Parent Appreciation Picnic; and Clean and Beautiful volunteers for Community Day. Planned Activities: Continue to participate in the above annual activities plus additional civic causes as requested. • Latin Club - Junior Classical League (Sponsor:TBD) - The Latin Club endeavors to promote an appreciation for Latin, Greek and their ancient civilizations while developing scholarship and leadership in its members. Past Activities: Various forums; monthly meetings; Latin-related studies; Saturnalia Party; Val-0-Grams Fundraiser; Ides of March Party; State Convention. Planned Activities: Fall Forum at Northview High School; Saturnalia Party; Val-0-Grams Fundraiser; Ides of March Party; State Convention. • Nutrition Advisory Counsel (Sponsor: School Nutrition Manager) - Provides hands-on opportunity for students to learn about nutrition and also provide feedback to the School Nutrition Manager regarding the cafeteria menu. Past Activities: Canned food drive for the needy; vendor taste-testing. Instructional sessions regarding exercise, obesity, and diabetes. Past Activities: Consumer judging; poultry judging; Rivers Alive project; Adopt - A - Highway; Christmas Parade; Dance-A-Thon; Fall Forum, State Congress; State Council; Bird Nerds; and gardening projects. Planned Activities: Same as above. • Student Council (Sponsor: Mr. Ryan Norman) - The purpose of the Student Council is to represent the student body in matters pertaining to Newton High School. Past Activities: Sponsor of Spirit Week and Homecoming events; Special Olympics volunteers; NHS Blood Drive; Food Drive; visits to nursing homes; council elections. Planned Activities: Same as in the past. • Vocational Opportunities Clubs of America - VOCA (Sponsor: Dr. Jacqueline Pennington) - VOCA enables members to recognize and develop strong leadership skills. Members learn to plan, organize, and implement various leadership-related activities.
