  1. Report of Principal:

Chairperson Joe Gheesling reported to the School Council on School Attendance Zones, School Improvement, Academics, and Athletics.

School Attendance Zones: A meeting was held at NHS on 11/7/05 to discuss the boundaries for Alcovy High School. Mr. Gheesling distributed a map outlining the boundaries. There will be a meeting on 12/8/05 at EHS for those students entering their senior year in 2006 and zoned for Alcovy to file for a onetime exemption to attend their current school. This exemption must be filed by 12/15/05. Mr. Gheesling indicated that he expects the school population of NHS to be approximately 2200-2300 students in the Fall Semester 2006.

School Improvement:  Mr. Gheesling discussed the ongoing improvements of the gym floor, locker rooms, and backboards. He also unveiled landscaping plans for the front of the building. These plans will be implemented during the December break. The Pit Commons area doors will be painted Ram blue. The floor of the Band room has been replaced with tiles. A new Facility Manager, Arby Perry, will begin 11/14/05. Mr. Gheesling is requesting approval from the Board of Education for a new maintenance support position to assist in repairs of the building.

Academics: Mr. Gheesling announced that SAT scores for 2005 will be lower than the previous year due to more tech prep students taking the test. There are also concerns that NHS will not make AYP due to more economically disadvantaged students performing poorly on the math portion of the GHSGT.

Mr. Gheesling has implemented strategies to address poor performance on the Algebra portion of standardized tests. NHS is proud to announce that 5 students in the Class of 2005 scored a 3 or higher on at least 2 Advanced Placement exams. They are designated as AP Scholars. NHS also has 2 National Merit Scholarship Finalists from 2005.

Athletics: The NHS Boys’ Cross Country team won their Region while the Girls’ team placed second. For the second year in a row, the Girls’ Softball team won their Region.

  1. Old Business:  None
  2. New Business: None
  3.  Adjournment

With no further business to come before the School Council, the meeting was adjourned at 5:10pm
