The Newton High School Council met in regular session on Tuesday, September 13,2005, at 4:00pm.

The meeting was held at Newton High School, 140 Ram Drive, Covington, GA 30014 School Council Members present:

School Council Members absent: Beth Mize, Ed Bates (5) Members were present, constituting a quorum.

1.   Call to Order

Chairperson Joe Gheesling called the meeting to order at 4:05 pm

2.  Approval of Agenda

Chairperson Joe Gheesling distributed the agenda posted pursuant to the Open Meetings Act

Motion to approve Agenda by Jeff Ransom, Seconded by John Callaway VOTE: YES

3.  Approval of Minutes

Minutes of last meeting not available

4.            Approval of School Council Calendar for 2005-2006 

Chairperson Joe Gheesling submitted the following dates for School Council

Meetings during the 2005-2006 school year: November 8, January 10, March 14,

and May 2.  Motion to accept dates by John Callaway, seconded by Jeff Ransom, motion

carried.

VOTE: YES

5.  Election of Officers

Vice Chair- John Callaway Secretary  - Nancy Schulz

Motion to accept slate of officers by Joe Gheesling, seconded by Jeff Ransom, Motion carried. VOTE: YES

6.  Presentation to School Council N/A

7.  Report of Principal:

Chairperson Joe Gheesling reported to the School Council on Academics, Athletics, and Facilities.

Academics: Current enrollment is 2875, 400 more students than last year, this includes 15-20 evacuees from the New Orleans area. SAT scores continue to increase with the most recent average at 1050. ACT scores also improving, 204 seniors took the test and scored above the state average. NHS made AYP in 2004-2005 with 17% special education students factored into the result. NHS was well represented at Governor's Honors and made a clean sweep in the Georgia Young Authors contest'.

Athletics: NHS had 8 region championships in 2004-2005. Praise to the new cross-country team coach Scott Raines. There are now 47 participants in cross-country and a vibrant booster club. Compliments to the Blue Rambler Band for continued improvement.

Facilities: The new bus canopy is aesthetically pleasing as well as functional. The front of the building will be landscaped by December. Compliments for the new loop parking. The cafeteria has new coat of paint, new tables, and new awnings. There is also a new floor in the gym and Mr. Gheesling has ordered 596 lockers to replace the old ones in the athletic locker rooms.

With no new business to come before the School Council, the meeting was adjourned at 4:55pm. The next meeting of the Newton High School Council will be held on November 8, 2005 at 4:00pm at Newton High School
