National School Lunch Week“Now Playing: School Lunch” highlights #NSLW2020

To recognize the National School Lunch Program, serving nearly 30 million children each day, Newton County Schools will celebrate National School Lunch Week from October 12-16, 2020. The theme, “Now Playing: School Lunch!” puts the spotlight on the importance of a healthy school lunch in a child’s life.

National School Lunch Week will highlight the nutritious foods available daily at Newton County Schools and communities. Additionally, the district’s School Nutrition Program has planned various activities aimed at providing nutrition education and healthy Smart Snack choices for our in-person and virtual learners. Our team is especially excited about launching our Let’s Eat! Food Bus providing à la carte smart snacks to both in-person and virtual learners considering healthy snacks are an excellent complement to a child’s daily food and beverage intake.

“School lunches offer students fruits and vegetables, whole grains and milk, and meet federal nutrition standards limiting fat, calories and sodium,” said Abdul Lindsay, School Nutrition Director. “National School Lunch Week helps us educate parents and students about all the wonderful benefits of our lunch program.”

Considering this year’s National School Lunch Week “Hollywood” theater related theme and snacks typically consumed at theaters, our team provided healthy snack alternatives to the sugary, salty, and fatty options. Please consider trying our homemade pretzels inspired by our District Chef, Tanesha Baker this Friday, October 16, 2020 from our food bus parked at Eastside High School outdoor atrium.

The federally-funded National School Lunch Program (NSLP) has been fueling students for success for more than 70 years. Given the pandemic and the unprecedented response of the United States Department of Agriculture to extend Free meals to all children 18 or 21 years or younger with a disability, NSLP is poised to meet the nutrition needs of more children this school year.

The “Now Playing School Lunch” campaign is made possible by the nonprofit School Nutrition Association. Parents and students can follow the fun using the hashtags #NSLW2020, #NowPlayingSchoolLunch and #SchoolLunch.
